Dental computed tomography (3D scan)

About the Service

Sometimes a conventional dental X-ray is not sufficient to establish an accurate diagnosis. In such cases, at Paratsels Clinic, we perform a 3D dental X-ray examination using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). This technology provides a three-dimensional view of the jaw or a specific area, allowing detailed visualization of bone structures and tooth roots.

Why Is 3D Diagnostics Important?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) allows dentists to see details that may not be visible on conventional two-dimensional X-rays. These include hidden pathological changes, bone height and structure, the condition of the maxillary sinuses, nerve canals, and temporomandibular joints. This examination helps dentists to:

  • detect hidden tooth decay, cysts, and inflammatory lesions;
  • determine the position of impacted (unerupted) teeth;
  • plan orthodontic treatment;
  • accurately plan dental implant placement and prosthetic treatment;
  • evaluate the quality of root canal treatment;
  • assess injuries following trauma;
  • identify developmental abnormalities of the jaws.

How Is the Examination Performed?

No special preparation is required. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes:

  1. You stand in front of the X-ray machine, and a protective apron is provided when appropriate.
  2. You gently bite onto a special positioning plate covered with a disposable protective sleeve to help keep your head still.
  3. The dentist or radiographer selects the appropriate examination programme and starts the scan.
  4. The machine smoothly rotates around your head. The scanning process itself takes from a few seconds up to 30 seconds.
  5. The software creates a three-dimensional image, allowing the dentist to examine the structures from different angles and at various depths.

Advantages of 3D Dental Imaging

  • Low radiation dose. The radiation dose is generally lower than that of many conventional medical CT examinations.
  • Three-dimensional imaging. Provides detailed visualization of anatomical structures and their spatial relationships.
  • Fast examination. The scanning process takes only a few seconds.
  • High precision. Detailed 3D images allow accurate measurements and precise treatment planning.
  • Quick results. Images are available shortly after the examination and can be discussed with your dentist during your appointment.

Is 3D Dental Imaging Safe?

Dental Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) uses a relatively low radiation dose, which depends on the equipment, scanning programme, and size of the area examined. We perform CBCT examinations only when clinically indicated and select the smallest scanning area necessary. For pregnant women and children, the examination is performed only when the dentist or physician considers it medically necessary.
